  • About Notting Hill
    • History of Notting HillIt’s quite hard to believe that what is currently London’s most fashionable area was described as “a massive slum, full of multi-occupied houses, crawling with rats and rubbish” only 40 years ago – definitely a no-go area. Such an place would not have warranted a second glance by London’s hip and famous, let alone have inspired a film starring a bumbling Englishman and a starry American actress (if they did indeed made such films 40 years ago). The area had always been though of as the bad part of the borough of Kensington and Chelsea, yet in the past 30 or so years it has seen a massive transformation to the status it holds today. Two centuries ago, the area was little more than wasteland. It was only in 1840 that the area became more residential with the construction of the Ladbroke and Norland estates. At that time, Notting Hill was either known as the Potteries (because of the nearby pottery works) or the Piggeries (after the three-to-one ratio of pigs to people – how glam!). These large houses were carved up into multiple dwellings, and after World War II the area worsened to become slums. Notting Hill also became…
    • Getting to Notting HillIf you’re coming to the area by Underground, the best station to arrive at is Notting Hill Gate on the Central, Circle and District Lines. Other stations in the nearby area include Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Park and Royal Oak stations (all Hammersmith & City Line) to the west/north-west. There are also many buses operating across the whole of Notting Hill, including routes 27, 28, 31, 52, 70, 94, 328 and 452 amongst others. Take a look at Transport for London’s Kensington & Chelsea Bus Route maps for more details. The closest airport to Notting Hill is Heathrow Airport. From there you can either travel by Underground or train into Notting Hill and Central London. By Underground, take the Piccadilly Line all the way to Earl’s Court, before changing to the District Line (two stops to Notting Hill Gate). By train, take the Heathrow Express to Paddington Station, before changing for the District Line on the Underground (two stops to Notting Hill Gate). • Property in Notting HillUnsurprisingly, the regeneration of many parts of Notting Hill in the last decade or so has seen property prices spiral rapidly. What with the mixture of vibrant main streets and peaceful residential areas, and the plethora of shops, restaurants, bars and other sources of entertainment, this part of London is a very popular place to live. Moreover, the great transport links (bus and Underground – the Central Line provides a direct link to the City). Notting Hill is also extremely sought after because of the different types of properties – from modern new-build apartments, to flats in converted Victorian buildings, to grand large houses. If you are looking to buy or rent in the area, we’d definitely recommend you take a stroll down Notting Hill Gate. Many estate agents have branches on this busy main road, and if walk the stretch from where it meets Bayswater Road towards Ladbroke Grove (and beyond if you go on into Holland Park) you’ll be able to register with quite a few prime agents. • Notting Hill TriviaNow, we’re not suggesting that you traipse around Notting Hill trying to spot celebrities…but here we list a few places that you might be interested in. THAT Blue Door Westbourne Park Road Shown countless times in the film, it is in fact the front door of the house that was owned by writer/producer/director Richard Curtis (he wrote and produced Notting Hill) and his wife Emma Freud. He has long since moved from there – some joke that he made the film to increase popularity in the area Notting Hill, thereby raising property prices…including the value of his own house! Unfortunately, the original blue door that was seen in the movie has also departed us a long time ago, and been replaced with a more ordinary looking black one. Coffee Republic/Run-down store Corner of Portobello Road & Westbourne Park Road With this, I am not implying that the Coffee Republic cafe is in fact the same thing as a run-down store. What I do mean is that the run down store in front of which Hugh Grant spills orange juice all over Julia Roberts in the film is now, in fact, a Coffee Republic. Directly opposite…a Starbucks. Coronet Cinema Notting Hill Gate Featured…
    • Notting Hill – The FilmThe film Notting Hill, starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, was released in late Spring 1999, the “sequel” to the enormously popular Four Weddings and a Funeral, both of which were written and produced by Richard Curtis. Notting Hill had much in common with its predecesor. It seems that, according to Richard Curtis, there are certain roles that must exist in a film: – the bumbling Englishman (Hugh Grant in both) – the glamourous American (Julia Roberts and Andie MacDowell) – the dim-but-ever-so-sweet gentleman – the wise, slightly more serious woman – the completely kooky-in-a-nice-way girl I joke, of course. I personally wasn’t quite as enamoured with Notting Hill as I was with Four Weddings, but it’s a good film nevertheless. There are plenty of locations featured in the film that can be seen in the area. If you’d like an organised tour of these – as well as of locations of other movies that have been partially filmed in the area (such as About A Boy, Sliding Doors, The Italian Job, Love Actually and others) – why not go on the Notting Hill Movie Tour? Tours run twice a day every Saturday from March to November! Links  “Notting Hill” film from IMDB   “Notting Hill” film official website  “Four…

    • Portobello MarketLondon has many markets, but one of the best is this one – and we’re not just saying that because this is a guide to Notting Hill! The world-famous Portobello Market is absolutely unmissable on your visit to Notting Hill (both as something to visit, but also physically, seeing as it’s one one of the most popular roads). The mile-long street market sells a wide variety of goods, clothes, antiques and even food, with different items being sold on different days. It is open every day, except for Sunday. On weekdays , you’ll find a wonderful fresh fruit and veg market, generally located between where Portobello Road intersects Colville Terrace and Westbourne Park Road. On Fridays and Saturdays there is a funky selection of clothes stalls, located under the Westway. Beyond that is a plethora of stalls selling second-hand goods. And of course, the market wouldn’t be the market without the renowned antiques market on Saturdays! The market on this day is by far the busiest. As long as you don’t mind fairly big crowds, you’ll be fine – but if you do, be warned! Whatever day you go on, you’ll find a number of cafes, pubs and bars along…

    • Restaurants in Notting HillAs to be expected, there are countless places to eat in the area – some very affordable, some pretty exclusive, some famous for one reason or another – that we couldn’t possible name every single place. However, we bring those places that we think are worth checking out. The Churchill Arms  119 Kensington Church Street, W8 Underground: Notting Hill Gate  Very friendly pub, with a fantastic atmosphere – the kind of place where you everyone probably would know your name, if they could. Serves delicious Thai food at very good prices. Absolutely beautiful in the summer when the outside of the pub is covered in flowers. The Commander Porterhouse and Oyster Bar 47 Hereford Rd, W2 5AH Website: www.thecommanderbar.co.uk  Underground: Notting Hill Gate  A relaxed, friendly and stunning restaurant and bar with an on-site deli, oyster bar, gardens and 3 beautiful private dining rooms. The Castle  225 Portobello Road, W11 Underground: Ladbroke Grove or Notting Hill Gate  There are a number of pubs on Portobello Road that are ideal for having a drink or two after a hard day’s shopping/walking/ sightseeing…or just ideal for a having a drink or two…and this is one of my favourites! • Notting Hill CarnivalThe Carnival – the second largest street festival in the world (behind Rio, fact fans) – takes place over the Sunday and Monday on the last weekend in August. The Monday of this weekend is always a Bank Holiday (public holiday) in England so everyone can party away to their hearts’ content without skiving off work. (This isn’t why we have a public holiday, but it’s certainly as good a reason as any.) The Carnival arose from the racial tensions that were prevalent in the area in the mid to late 1950s. Britain’s first race riots broke out in Notting Hill in August 1958. The carnival emerged as a response to them in 1959 as an indoor event; in 1965 it took to the streets and has evolved into the massive event we know today. The main part of the carnival is the parade which stretches out over a route roughly three miles in length. Numerous sound systems and stages are set up proving typically Carribbean music, as well as that more pop-chart orientated! You’ll also find many stalls selling food and drink to help get you in the spirit. Just don’t forget your whistle! This year’s Carnival is on Sunday 28th…

  • About This SiteHi! I am Anna Zgorelec, and I own, run and maintain this website. Okay, admittedly, I don’t actually live in Notting Hill Gate, but I do live in not-far-away Kensington. However, I have had a good knowledge of the area. My early years (4-7) were spent at Pembridge Hall School just behind Notting Hill Gate and my early teenage years were spent at Whiteley’s in Bayswater (not all the time, obviously, I mean I did go to school and stuff…) where you will always encounter bunches of teenagers hanging around. (Don’t worry though, they’re not that scary.) I actually run four other websites: The Guide s to Kensington and Chelsea which is just as the title suggests, Visit Croatia, a guide to the beautiful country of Croatia – I created the former because I’ve lived in that area for practically all my life; I do the latter because I am of Croatian origin and am trying to promote the country and provide information about it. I created this site that you are reading right now because I know a good thing when I see one and want other people to enjoy it too; it is purely a coincidence that some little heard of film had…
