Aspect Foundation concert on 25th June concludes their 2013/2014 season

The Aspect Foundation for Music and Arts’ very successful 2013/14 season comes to a close next week with Schumann – Music, Tales and Magic (Part II): Schumann’s Piano Cycles and the Novels of Jean Paul taking place in the beautiful setting of Leighton House.

The concert will feature pianist Susan Tomes, one of Britain’s foremost pianists, and an illustrated talk from author and lecturer Robert Philip.

Robert Schumann’s favourite author was Jean Paul Richter – with Schumann once writing to a friend that from Jean Paul ‘I learned more about counterpoint than from my music teacher’. The evening will explore what it was about this (now unfashionable) writer that so appealed to the young Schumann, and what the nature of this ‘counterpoint’ was that Schumann learned.

The music presented during the evening is intimately connected with Jean Paul, and in particular with his novel Die Flegeljahre (The Awkward Age).

The Aspect Foundation for Music and Arts was established to promote a novel concert format – “Music in Context”. Concerts over the season have seen a combination of performance, lecture and discussion take place, providing the audience with not just music but a presentation of art history and social culture as well. The Foundation’s aim is to both support and promote the artists involved, and to enlighten and inspire audiences with an intellectually charged collaboration between musicians and speakers.

Tickets cost £25 (price includes wine) and can be purchased by calling the box office on 0779 909 0826 or on-line at www.aspectfoundation.net.
