In honour of this year’s Remembrance Day, Holland Park Sinfonia will be performing a concert at 7.30pm on Friday, 13th November at St Peter’s Church in Notting Hill.
The programme for the concert centres around music that has emerged from war or from the themes of war – but rather than focusing on tragedy, music that sounds like rays of hope. The pieces performed will be Symphony No. 5 by Vaughan Williams, Strauss’ Oboe Concerto and Theme and Variations by Korngold.
Strauss’ Oboe Concerto will be performed by soloist Sasha Puller. Sasha graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the Royal College of Music in 2023, and has begun studying at Trinity Laban, graduating with a Professional Diploma next summer. She has performed as a concerto soloist frequently in recent years, including performing the Mozart and Strauss Oboe Concerti and Bach’s Concerto for Oboe and Violin with ensembles throughout London. She also worked as an oboe specialist at the famed Howarth of London.
Holland Park Sinfonia are a new orchestra comprised of young talents, founded and led by Jashandeep, a 22-year-old self-taught conductor from Punjab, India. Jashandeep’s story is an amazing one – he moved to London four years ago, to Notting Hill, at the age of 18. With no classical background at all, he watched an orchestra perform for the first time in February 2024 – a life-changing event for him, as he decided then that he wanted to be a conductor. Jashandeep taught himself to read music and scores, and to conduct. He believes himself to be the first ever Turbaned Sikh conductor.
He dreamed of starting an orchestra whilst working at a local coffee shop. Jashandeep was helped to raise money to cover the costs of the orchestra by customers of the coffee shop and other locals, and was able to found Holland Park Sinfonia. The orchestra’s inaugural concert was held this February, with a second following in June. They have also performed at the legendary Ladbroke Hall venue, and will return there for a very special concert in December.
Holland Park Sinfonia’s players are a mix of young professionals and students from conservatoires. They work very hard on their sound and are very proud of what they have achieved so far – rightfully so! You can see videos of some of their past performances at https://hollandparksinfonia.co.uk/videos/.
Tickets are priced at £25 for general admission, or £11.55 for students/under 25s.
