On Saturday 22nd June 2024, the Krio Descendants Union – United Kingdom and Ireland‘s Untold Stories project – in collaboration with the Africa Centre – will be hosting a discussion event with the amazing 101-year-old Lauretta – West Africa’s own Vera Lynn. Lauretta’s father was from Sierra Leone and she also belonged to the same Entertainments National Services Association as Ms Lynn, singing and playing piano for the troops during World War II.
Post-war, Lauretta was a broadcaster on the BBC and sang at a fashionable West End nightclub, meeting celebrities such as Louis Armstrong and Elizabeth Taylor!
Come and hear this interesting, humourous ‘Notable Krio’ lady tell her largely untold interesting life story. There will also be a Q&A after the discussion event.

The event is being held at Kensington Central Library, just north of Kensington High Street and less than five minutes walk from the Underground station and buses 9, 23, 27, 28, 49 and 328.
The ‘Untold Stories’ project is run by the Krio Descendants Union – United Kingdom and Ireland (KDU-UKI). The project is funded by the Mayor Of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm. KDU-UK&I was formed in 2019 by Krios in the UK who had a desire to establish a member-led, non-profit organization that would promote Krio heritage, culture and legacy and show its unique links to Britain. The ‘Krios’ are descendants of previously enslaved and free peoples who the British resettled in Sierra Leone’s ‘Province of Freedom’ from 1787.
