This Saturday, St John’s Church in Notting Hill will be hosting a fantastically spooky Halloween event: a live screening of the classic silent movie The Hunchbank of Notre Dame – based on the novel by Victor Hugo – accompanied by the church’s newly restored organ!
A candlelit cinema will be set up in St John’s Church to really set the tone of the evening, with celebrated classic silent film organist Donald Mackenzie accompanying the screening with a live improvisation on the Church’s organ. Mr Mackenzie will also be hosting a pre-concert talk (which is included in the ticket price), explaining his thought processes behind his improvisation, part of which will be based on a set of themes chosen by the audience – so make sure you come armed with ideas and questions!
There will also be an on-site pop up bar with a selection of wine, beer, soft drinks, popcorn and other handmade snacks on sale, so you can sit back and relax and get into scared mode good and proper.
The talk starts at 6.30pm, lasting approximately half an hour, with the screening itself at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost £14.50 plus booking fee (£8.50 + bf for concessions) and can be booked online at www.wegottickets.com/filmfugitive. Snap them up quick!
You may remember a few months ago that we posted about a Carnival-themed performance by the London Gypsy Orchestra at the Church, which was one of the first events that celebrated the newly restored 18th-century organ at St John’s. Restored with a generous grant of £373,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, this Halloween special is also being supported by the Fund and continues with the list of events celebrating this restoration.
