believe that what is currently London\u2019s most fashionable area was described as \u201ca massive slum, full of multi-occupied houses, crawling with rats and rubbish\u201d only 40 years ago \u2013 definitely a no-go area. Such an place would not have warranted a second glance by London\u2019s hip and famous, let alone have inspired a film starring a bumbling Englishman and a starry American actress (if they did indeed made such films 40 years ago). The area had always been though of as the bad part of the borough of Kensington and Chelsea, yet in the past 30 or so years it has seen a massive transformation to the status it holds today. Two centuries ago, the area was little more than wasteland. It was only in 1840 that the area became more residential with the construction of the Ladbroke and Norland estates. At that time, Notting Hill was either known as the Potteries (because of the nearby pottery works) or the Piggeries (after the three-to-one ratio of pigs to people \u2013 how glam!). These large houses were carved up into multiple dwellings, and after World War II the area worsened to become slums. Notting Hill also became\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/li><li id=\"menu-item-53\" class=\"menu-item menu-item-type-post_type menu-item-object-page menu-item-53\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehill.co.uk\/index.php\/about-notting-hill\/getting-to-notting-hill\/\"><span>Getting to Notting Hill<span class=\"sc_layouts_menu_item_description\">If you\u2019re coming to the area by Underground, the best station to arrive at is Notting Hill Gate on the Central, Circle and District Lines. Other stations in the nearby area include Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Park and Royal Oak stations (all Hammersmith &#038; City Line) to the west\/north-west. There are also many buses operating across the whole of Notting Hill, including routes 27, 28, 31, 52, 70, 94, 328 and 452 amongst others. From there you can either travel by Underground or train into Notting Hill and Central London. By Underground, take the Piccadilly Line all the way to Earl\u2019s Court, before changing to the District Line (two stops to Notting Hill Gate). By train, take the\u00a0Heathrow Express\u00a0to Paddington Station, before changing for the District Line on the Underground (two stops to Notting Hill Gate). What with the mixture of vibrant main streets and peaceful residential areas, and the plethora of shops, restaurants, bars and other sources of entertainment, this part of London is a very popular place to live. Moreover, the great transport links (bus and Underground \u2013 the Central Line provides a direct link to the City). Notting Hill is also extremely sought after because of the different types of properties \u2013 from modern new-build apartments, to flats in converted Victorian buildings, to grand large houses. If you are looking to buy or rent in the area, we\u2019d definitely recommend you take a stroll down Notting Hill Gate. Many estate agents have branches on this busy main road, and if walk the stretch from where it meets Bayswater Road towards Ladbroke Grove (and beyond if you go on into Holland Park) you\u2019ll be able to register with quite a few prime agents. THAT Blue Door Westbourne Park Road Shown countless times in the film, it is in fact the front door of the house that was owned by writer\/producer\/director Richard Curtis (he wrote and produced\u00a0Notting Hill)\u00a0and his wife Emma Freud. He has long since moved from there \u2013 some joke that he made the film to increase popularity in the area Notting Hill, thereby raising property prices\u2026including the value of his own house! Unfortunately, the original blue door that was seen in the movie has also departed us a long time ago, and been replaced with a more ordinary looking black one. Coffee Republic\/Run-down store Corner of Portobello Road &#038; Westbourne Park Road With this, I am not implying that the Coffee Republic cafe is in fact the same thing as a run-down store. What I do mean is that the run down store in front of which Hugh Grant spills orange juice all over Julia Roberts in the film is now, in fact, a Coffee Republic. Directly opposite\u2026a Starbucks. Coronet Cinema Notting Hill Gate Featured\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/li><li id=\"menu-item-462\" class=\"menu-item menu-item-type-post_type menu-item-object-page menu-item-462\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehill.co.uk\/index.php\/about-notting-hill\/notting-hill-the-film\/\"><span>Notting Hill \u2013 The Film<span class=\"sc_layouts_menu_item_description\">The film\u00a0Notting Hill, starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, was released in late Spring 1999, the \u201csequel\u201d to the enormously popular\u00a0Four Weddings and a Funeral, both of which were written and produced by Richard Curtis. The Monday of this weekend is always a Bank Holiday (public holiday) in England so everyone can party away to their hearts\u2019 content without skiving off work. (This isn\u2019t\u00a0why\u00a0we have a public holiday, but it\u2019s certainly as good a reason as any.) The Carnival arose from the racial tensions that were prevalent in the area in the mid to late 1950s. Britain\u2019s first race riots broke out in Notting Hill in August 1958. The carnival emerged as a response to them in 1959 as an indoor event; in 1965 it took to the streets and has evolved into the massive event we know today. The main part of the carnival is the parade which stretches out over a route roughly three miles in length.
