Local artist Elena Tsoka’s exhibition at Great Western Studios, 15th – 22nd May

Notting Hill-based artist Elena Tsoka will be presenting her works at Great Western Studios next month in an exhibition entitled “unseen” – with works that will explore the link between time and feelings, and the smaller world within the bigger world.

Using mixed media on canvases to explore blurred emotions, realities, ideas, and stories, Elena’s central technique is to build up many layers of paint, often to a considerable extent, or to completely remove layers. This process of addition and subtraction reflects her study of uncertainty and alteration, alternating between figuration and abstraction. Collecting images from everyday life, Elena creates a dialogue of buildings, open windows, figures, objects, and stories in her paintings, the protagonists of which are without any particular characteristics – although they represent each and everyone, they are also unknown and therefore ‘unseen’.

Elena says:

My work is about the human stories that are happening next to us, the fast rhythms we live in, the scenes we see that never return, the people we pass by and never meet again, and the exact seconds of time that influence the rest of our lives

Elena was born in South Africa, and studied Architecture and Interior Design before focusing on art. Currently living and working in Notting Hill, her work has been exhibited in London and Athens, and her paintings can be found in private collections in the UK and overseas.
