ENTANGLEMENT by Dominique de Bellefroid and Marguerite van Boetzelaer at J/M Gallery, 6th to 18th February

A new exhibition – ENTANGLEMENT – will be coming to Notting Hill’s J/M Gallery from 6th to 18th February 2025. A collaboration between vibrant Belgian artist Dominique de Bellefroid and spirited Dutch artist Marguerite van Boetzelaer, the exhibition considers the complex and fascinating universe of quantum physics, illustrating how separate elements can be deeply connected in mysterious ways. This scientific concept invites us to reconsider how seemingly distinct aspects of our reality can intertwine in surprising and manifest ways. Entanglement also suggests there is a connection, with its antithesis of unravelling and of separation. Life and death, and that which is left behind.

Contemporary artist Dominique de Bellefroid‘s artistic expression seems to capture the very essence of this entanglement, where life and art meet in a web of emotions, forms, and meanings. Her art offers a deep reflection on the nature of relationships and human experiences, highlighting how the disparate aspects of life interpenetrate and complement each other. Bellefroid’s works evoke how the fragments of life “come together and transform” to give birth to something vibrant and new. “Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed.” The key moments of existence, memories, interactions, and cultural influences intertwine to form not only our personal identity but also a collective one, rich and nuanced in nature.

In Marguerite van Boetzelaer’s work, it is entanglement and its antithesis separation that features as a topic. Polarities are shown in this current show, illustrating a process of life and death, the connection between the manifested, what we can see in form, and the unmanifested, that which we can sense potentially, but do not see. She has created a 3D sensorial experience to engage the viewer into a story of entanglement with a chair-like form at the heart of it. The solid form, the manifested, depicts a sense of brittle-boned life resonating somewhat with van Gogh’s chair, which tells his story, depicting something personal, something that has been left behind. Hand casts manipulating strings are the catalyst and main component to this particular installation of hers. The incorporated ethereal elements ascend into the unmanifested as if being surrounded by an extrapolation of aerial views that makes any grounding of coherence difficult to imagine. Her work is delicate and unleashed where no surface is ignored.
